How Long Does It Take to Install a Colorbond Fence?

One of the first questions homeowners ask when planning a new fence is

How long will it take to install?

Knowing the timeframe helps you plan around pets, neighbours, and your yard’s security.

Colorbond is the fence of choice for most Adelaide properties.

It’s durable, low-maintenance, and popular across suburban blocks. We’re always transparent about the fact that installation times aren’t always the same.

They depend on a few factors, which will be covered in a moment.

Typical Timeframes for Fence Installation In Adelaide

For a standard two-man crew, these are the average installation times:

Fence LengthTypical Timeframe
Under 15 metres2–3 days
15–30 metres3–5 days
30–45 metresJust over a week
45m+Up to 2 weeks

These estimates cover digging and concreting posts, allowing them to set, and then installing rails, sheets, and capping.

NOTE: Timeframes assume clear weather and standard soil. The following factors can shorten or extend your project. (However, we do everything we can to finish faster.)

What Affects Fence Installation Times?

1. Scope of Work & Design Choices

The bigger the project, the more time it’ll take to complete. That’s fairly simple to understand. Straight fence lines are straightforward, while stepped or sloped fences take more time to plan and build.

Adding features like custom gates or concrete sleepers will also extend the schedule.

Also…

Custom heights and colours take longer to manufacture, which can delay the start of the project.

2. Weather Conditions

The weather is a big variable in fence building.

Rain delays us from concreting posts because moisture weakens the mix, leaving the posts unstable.

In Adelaide, winter months can bring more interruptions, while summer generally allows work to move on schedule.

We also don’t want to damage our tools in the rain!

3. Ground Conditions

Most of the installation time comes down to how quickly post holes can be dug. Soft, clear soil makes the process quick.

On the other hand, clay, rock, or tree roots slow things down and can add significant extra hours to the job.

We recently had a job where every hole along the fence line was blocked with tree roots.

A 4-day job turned into 2 weeks.

Ground conditions can seriously slow down the job, which we won’t know until digging starts.

4. Fence Removal & Site Prep

If there’s an existing fence that needs to be removed before installation, that will take time.

A standard timber fence is relatively straightforward to take down, while something like a brush fence with concrete foundations takes much longer. Any other site work will add to the total timeframe, including vegetation clearing or levelling uneven ground.

Is Colorbond Fence Installation Quick?

Fence install going up on schedule

Generally, yes.

Once the posts are set and the concrete has hardened, Colorbond fences go up fast. Rails, sheets, and capping can often be installed in a single day for smaller jobs. Good neighbour fences do take a bit longer to install than post and rail fences.

The bottleneck is always in the preparation — site prep, digging holes, and concreting posts. Once that stage is complete, the rest of the build moves quickly.
