Despite what you may have heard, getting a new fence installed in Adelaide doesn’t have to be a long and stressful process. In fact, it’s pretty simple when you’ve got a rough idea of how it should go.
This article will give you that rough idea so you can get the ball rolling on your new fence starting today! Wouldn’t that be nice? We’ll guide you on finding reputable contractors, getting affordable quotes, and what happens next when you accept a quote.
Let’s start at step 1:
Finding Reputable Fencing Contractors In Adelaide
Finding Adelaide fencing contractors who are honest, reliable, and know what they’re doing is most of your job done. There are plenty to choose from. But only a few are worth your time. You’ll want to avoid the companies with a bunch of 1-star reviews, especially those that mention low-quality work or lousy customer service.
Because we all know those reviews aren’t written for no reason.
Chances are, if others have been treated badly by that company, you will too.
Take all the time you need to find the right crew. Don’t rush this very important step as it plays a huge role in the final result.
Quick Tip: Specialisation Matters!
Here’s a golden rule for hiring fence tradies:
Avoid the general “jack of all trades” contractors.
Find a specialist who has a proven track record of building your specific type of fence.
Need a tubular fence with an automatic sliding gate?
Go with the team that specializes in that – Not the blokes who do brush fencing.
Each type of fence comes with its own unique construction challenges.
General contractors often get stuck on unique challenges they haven’t faced before.
With specialists, you won’t have that problem. They’re well-equipped to deal with any issue related to the type of fence they specialise in.

Get a Price Estimate For Your Fencing Project

So, you’ve found the Adelaide fencing company you want to work with?
Great!
The next step is getting a price estimate for your project (AKA, a quote). We fencing contractors assess your project in one of two ways:
- Via photos of the site and a detailed description of the work involved.
- By visiting the site for an inspection and chatting about the job in person.
Or we’ll use a combination of both ways. Depending on the complexity of the job.
If possible, look for someone who can give you a quote online without needing an in-person inspection.
This will save you time and there’s less commitment to one company if the price doesn’t suit your budget.
Quick Tip: Compare Quotes!
It’s always a smart move to compare multiple fencing quotes.
I’m sure you’re aware that there are plenty of contractors out there looking to squeeze you for every penny they can get. Looking to overcharge for simple work and straight up rip you off.
That’s just the truth of the industry.
Comparing quotes from at least 2 or 3 companies ensures you’re paying a fair price and protects your wallet.
With that said, here’s a quick word of caution:
Don’t just go with the cheapest quote!
You’ve heard the expression; “You pay for what you get”.
Going with the cheapest quote might mean your fence gets built by uninsured rookies who couldn’t care less about quality.
Choose the most professional and experienced contractors, not the cheapest.

Another Tip: Provide Accurate Details!
Something we get often here at Calabria Fencing:
Inaccurate fencing details.
We hate to do it, but finding out there’s more fencing to do than what we were initially told means we need to charge more. It wastes our time as much as yours. So before requesting a quote, please ensure the details (metres, height, etc.) are accurate.
P.S. If you aren’t sure of the details, ask for an on-site measure and quote.
When a Site Inspection Is Necessary
Sometimes, photos and a description just aren’t enough.
Especially if your project is a bit more complicated than “Fence remove → Fence install”.
In this case, it’s good to get an on-site inspection. Fencing contractors will come out to your property, assess the job in person, and consult with you about the best approach.
Usually takes less than 10 or 15 minutes.
If your property has a sloped yard, obstacles along the fence line, or tricky areas that aren’t clear from photos, a site inspection is the way to go.
It ensures the quote is accurate and prevents price increases later on.
What Happens After You Accept The Quote?

For starters, you can pop the champagne and celebrate with the family, because your work is (mostly) done. Once you’ve agreed to the quoted price, it’s time to talk with your contractor about the next steps:
- Schedule a start date for the work.
- Discuss any upfront costs (more on that below).
- Stay in regular contact with the tradies to get progress updates until the job is complete.
How To Schedule Work Start Dates
When you accept the quote, the next step is working out a start date.
Two things to consider here:
- Are you ready for the guys to make a start on the work?
- Are the contractors available any time soon to start?
There’s nothing wrong with saying “yes” to a quote, but holding off for a few weeks to get back from your holiday in Korea. Chances are, your contractors won’t be able to start straight away anyway. We’re usually mid-way through other work whenever we schedule new projects.
Do You Need To Pay Anything Upfront?
While you’re in the scheduling conversation, you might as well work out if there are any upfront costs.
Spoiler alert;
Most fencing contractors require an upfront payment before starting the work.
For several reasons:
- Fencing materials must paid in full before being delivered on-site. (delivery fee included)
- Contractors need some fuel before starting – Cars don’t run on empty. Neither can the men building your newest spectacle.
However, the upfront cost should only ever be a small fraction of the total price. No more than 50%.
Pro tip:
If a contractor asks for more than half the total cost upfront… RUN!
It’s a huge red flag, and it could mean they’re planning to take your money and vanish without doing the work. It’s not common, but it does happen. Negotiate with the fencing contractors so you don’t need to pay more than 30% of the total cost upfront.
We only ask for 30% of the total quoted price upfront 🙂
Should You Do Anything Before Contractors Arrive?
Not really. One thing you could do is ensure the fence line is clear before they start.
This doesn’t mean removing an entire fence yourself. (Don’t worry, we take care of that!). But you could take a little time to clear away any small bushes, trees, or other obstacles of nature blocking the way for your new fence.
Why?
It’s not so you can make the job easier for the lads.
It’s so they don’t charge you an arm and a leg extra for that little bit more work.
(Something tradies are well-known for doing; Overcharging.)
Taking on these little tasks yourself could save you $300 – $500 on the total quote.
How To Get Your Neighbour To Pay Their Fair Share

We encourage you to talk with your neighbour about the fencing situation before accepting a quote if you want them to pay half.
Ideally, you should agree to split costs before even looking for contractors.
However, we understand neighbours aren’t always the easiest to deal with. Especially when it comes to splitting bills.
